Immersive’s role on the 2014 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony embraced software programming and pixel mapping the 209 individual 360 LED rods, dynamic tracking, and sampling of content over the range of 36 vertical meters.
The Ceremony, directed by world-renowned director Daniele Finzi Pasca, started with a countdown, with the numbers appearing on the screens above the stands. When the scoreboard hit zero, the LED rods in the centre of Sochi’s Fisht arena exploded into bright colours.
The Forest of Light used video footage to produce a kinetic LED sculpture. Throughout the show, the Forest of Light provided the stage architecture that gave scale and perspective for much of the action that unfolded. TAIT Technologies designed and built the custom LED tubes, with each rod boasting an impressive 360-degree viewing angle enabling all 46,000 of the audience members and the global broadcast audience to see the same effect. Not only was the forest designed to beautifully fill the huge void created by the stadium roof but through automating the trusses the entire system could be lowered to become an integral part of the performances on the field of play.
The uniquely formed, LED display was made up of 12m long tubes containing 8 strips of LED, with a pixel pitch of 20mm. Each tube had a central core of LED elements suitable to receive video signal with 360-degree visibility and was controlled from our Ai media servers, which were capable of mapping the 3-dimensional rods. Due to the high-profile nature of the event, the system was designed to ensure that no single point of failure could occur and inhibit reliable delivery. Ai is considered the most capable provider of true volumetric video content control.
Immersive programmed and pixel-mapped the 240 individual LED rods. Using the Ai visualiser enabled the show designers, content houses, programmers and technicians to work remotely on the project and still see the installation within the same 3D model of the stadium. This helps in a number of ways with workflow and ongoing problem-solving. The 3D visualiser was a critical part of the design process, as the creative team was able to see and experiment with all content before the event.
