Immersive lit up a gigantic wall of LED for Tesco’s Christmas TV advert. The stunt involved some 500 sq meters of panels holding more than 8 million LED lights plus loads of traditional Christmas decorations. Immersive created all the animation, which was full of surprises to wow the viewers. The show was filmed for the Tesco Christmas advert, which went viral on social media soon after the first airing.
This stunt became part of the Tesco Christmas advert and was mainly a present from Tesco to its shoppers in Wigan. It was a homage to the over-enthusiastic and over-decorated homes that make Christmas such a fun spectacle. Immersive were pleased with the brief because it is not often that humour is used on a project of this scale.
The design of the animated content was made to resemble the 2 frame animated look of neon LED decorations that households display in their gardens. Even when we went to fully rendered 3D, we did it in a super kitsch manner, and animated it to look more fun and homemade. The audience’s reactions to the surprise breakdowns were priceless.
The advert debuted during the season finale of Downtown Abbey. Thousands of viewers across Britain saw it marking the end of a weekend of television packed with the infamous Christmas adverts from major retailers. Christmas adverts as are important to the UK as Super Bowl adverts are to the US.
The transformation of the Wigan storefront aimed to bring Christmas spirit to an un-assuming town was the idea of Widen + Kennedy, who enlisted Immersive to make it happen.
We covered the entire 78-meter storefront with LED and arranged a huge amount of Xmas decorations to be animated alongside the animations. Altogether the show consisted of: 13 penguins, 6 Christmas puddings, 8 2D reindeer, 9 3D reindeer, 6 Santa faces, 9 swans, 98 shopping trollies, more a kilometre of rope light, 8 x 4M Christmas trees, 1 x 5M Christmas trees, 10 x 1M Christmas trees not to mention the many kilometres of electrical cable to connect it all up. Immersive used Ai Media Servers (and a little bit of Christmas magic).
